HCC to offer young writers institute

April 06, 2013

As part of the upcoming Nora Roberts Writing Institute at Hagerstown Community College, HCC will also offer a young writers institute for high school students entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade.

The young writers institute will be held Aug. 2 and 3, the same weekend as writing institute, and will feature a series of workshops and events geared toward aspiring, young writers.

Workshops will include fiction-crafting and publishing, as well as the opportunity to network with other teen writers. Cost is $185 per person.

Participants also have the opportunity to take part in a writing contest. The “What’s Your Backstory?” contest asks students to submit an original work of fiction in 1,000 words or less featuring a main character in a critical moment. The grand-prize winner will receive free tuition to the young writers institute and a $50 gift card to Amazon.com. The winning entry will also be read during the opening session of the writing institute on Aug. 2. Two additional runner-up winners will receive a 50 percent discount on tuition to the young writers institute and a $25 gift card to Amazon.com. All contest participants will receive a free copy of their published work in the contest magazine, “Back Talk,” which will be distributed during the conference.

The contest deadline is June 1. For submission guidelines or more information about the young writers institute, go to www.hagerstowncc.edu/kids/info.html or call 240-500-2236. For more information about the Nora Roberts Writing Institute, go to http://nrwi.hagerstowncc.edu.
