Prep Softball: Blazers blank South

CLEAR SPRING — Clear Spring’s softball team took advantage of excellent baserunning and a shaky South Hagerstown defense Friday to earn an 11-0 MVAL Antietam shutout of the Rebels in a game shortened to 4 1/2 innings due to the 10-run rule.

The Blazers (4-1, 4-1) only had six hits, but 10 steals and five South errors helped spark their offense.

“That’s the one thing we have concentrated on,” said Clear Spring coach Ron Baker. “We spent a good time on base running and today the girls responded. The opportunities presented themselves and we took advantage of them.”

Clear Spring started hot, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sarah Elwood earned a leadoff walk, stole second and came around to score on a passed ball. Tori Albert walked and Sarah Blickenstaff reached base on an error before Kris Mellott plated them both with a two-run double. Mellott came around to score on another error.

“We have some things to work on defensively,” said South coach Angie Jeffries.

Elwood scored her second run in the bottom of the second by reaching base on a dropped third strike, stealing second and third base and scoring on a groundout by Jenna Knable. Blickenstaff scored on a passed ball and Mackenzie Divelbiss plated Mellott with an RBI groundout in the third.

While Clear Spring’s offense was chugging around the bases, pitcher Savannah Mills was keeping South (1-3, 1-2) off of them. Mills pitched a three-hitter, punching out six and walking one. No Rebels base runner advanced past first base.

“I think Mills pitched a heck of a game today,” said Baker.

The Blazers’ final four runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Knable plated Lexi Albert with an RBI double and scored on a single by Tori Albert. Mills reached on an error which allowed Tori Albert to score and Blickenstaff — who reached on a walk — stole home on a Brooklyn Drury strikeout. Blickenstaff had four of Clear Spring’s total stolen bases.

Katelyn Mehrling pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief for South, striking out seven and walking two.
