HAGERSTOWN — The North Hagerstown Hubs remained undefeated on Friday by coming from behind to pull out a 6-5 win over the Smithsburg Leopards in eight innings in an MVAL Antietam softball game.

“I’m extremely proud of the girls today,” North coach Amanda Fleming said. “From start to finish, we played a great game as a team. I think the girls have a lot of confidence in themselves right now. With the way that we are playing right now, we are looking forward to the rest of the season.”

When the game went into extra innings, the international tiebreaker rule went into effect.

Smithsburg (2-3, 1-2) scored one run in the top of the eighth to go ahead 5-4. Vanesa Cuevas was on second base to start the inning. She went to third on a single by Laura Hartman and continued home on an outfield error.

North (4-0, 4-0) then put together its game-winning, two-run rally in the bottom of the eighth.

Morgan Froebe was on second base to start the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. One out later, Emily Folk hit a triple to left to drive in Froebe. After Danielle Wissinger and Emily Getz were walked intentionally to load the bases, Emma Gist hit an infield single halfway to the pitcher’s circle to drive in Folk with the winning run.

“We had some clutch hits today,” Fleming said. “The girls did a good job of putting the ball in play and making things happen for us.”

North junior pitcher Lauren Harbaugh got her first win of the season with a complete-game victory as she outdueled Smithsburg senior pitcher Cara Ferguson.

“Lauren Harbaugh did a great job on the mound for us today,” Fleming said. “She kept their hitters off-balanced. She got some help from her defense.”

Harbaugh helped herself out with two hits. Folk had two hits and scored two runs for the Hubs, while Wissinger added two RBIs and Alex Chinn scored two runs in the victory.

Kinsey Shifflett socked a solo homer in the top of the first and finished with two hits and two runs scored for Smithsburg. Laura Hartman banged out three hits for the Leopards, while Brooke Parks had two hits and two RBIs and Ferguson had two hits for the Leopards.

The Smithsburg defense committed five errors.

“North played a good game,” Smithsburg coach Katy Barnhart said. “We just have to clean it up, defensively. It hurts to lose that way. Hopefully, we’ll learn from it.”

The fifth, sixth and seventh innings were scoreless before the game was decided in the eighth.
