ST. JAMES — This was definitely no April Fool’s joke.

The Saint James Saints had a perfect 7-0 record as they came into Thursday’s Mid-Atlantic Conference baseball game against the Maret Frogs.

But the Frogs leaped on top of the Saints and beat them 17-1 to knock them from the undefeated ranks. The game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

“Maret pounded the ball,” Saint James coach Mickey Kerns said. “We made a few costly errors. The game was pretty much over after the first two innings. I give my kids credit for not quitting.”

Auslen Maggin and Andrew Culp each finished with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored for Maret. Maggin also belted a solo homer in the top of the fourth. Kane Hassan added two RBIs and two runs scored, while Jonathan Korobkin had three runs scored and an RBI for the Frogs.

Maret pitchers Nick Leonard and Adam Zeitler combined to hurl a five-hitter. Leonard pitched the first four innings as he got his 17th career win. Leonard is a 6-foot-8 senior who is heading to Georgetown University.

“Saint James is a pretty good team,” Maret coach Antoine Williams said. “They came into the game undefeated. We came out swinging the bats in the first inning. We took the momentum early and never really looked back. After the first inning, we put up 13 unanswered runs. They couldn’t match up. Our team’s offense was explosive today. We showed great discipline at the plate.”

Maret (8-1, 2-0) went to work immediately, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Hassan reached on an infield error and moved to third on Karobkin’s single to right. Karobkin took second on the throw to third. A wild pitch enabled Hassan to score and Karobkin to go to third. Maggin singled to center to knock in Karobkin. Maggin took second on a sacrifice bunt by Culp and scored when Drew Reid reached on a throwing error. After Shankar Mani was hit by a pitch, Reid scored on another throwing error.

Saint James (7-1, 2-1) scored a run in the bottom of the first to reduce the deficit to 4-1. With one out, Brett Vitkun reached on an outfield error. One out later, Bobby Leatherman singled to center to drive in Vitkun.

The Frogs came through with seven runs in the top of the second to increase their advantage to 11-1. Hassan stroked an RBI double, Karobkin hit an RBI single, Culp ripped an RBI double, Mani added an RBI single, Barnum clubbed a two-run triple and Prugebin had an RBI single.

Maret picked up three more runs in the third on a two-run single by Culp and a sacrifice fly by Mani.

Maret added a run in the fourth when Maggin blasted a solo homer to right.

The Frogs scored their final two runs in the fifth. Hassan hit an RBI single and Maggin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
