'Birds drop Suns in season opener

SALISBURY, Md. — The Delmarva Shorebirds edged the Hagerstown Suns 4-3 on Thursday night in the teams’ South Atlantic League season opener.

The Shorebirds broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning against Suns reliever Brian Rauh. With two outs and the bases empty, Joel Hutter hit his second triple of the game and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Delmarva went up 2-0 in the second against Suns starter Dixon Anderson. Hutter hit an RBI triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Roderick Bernadina.

The Suns rallied for three runs in the fifth against Shorebirds starter Parker Bridwell, with the help of some shaky defense. Craig Manuel led off with a single, stole second and, with two outs, scored on a single by Mike McQuillan. Estarlin Martinez then reached on an error by Bernadina in right field, allowing McQuillan to score to tie the game at 2-2. Hagerstown went up 3-2 as Wander Ramos reached on an error by center fielder Gregory Lorenzo, allowing Martinez to score.

Delmarva tied the game in the seventh against Rauh on an RBI single by Anthony Verga.

Anderson, who left with the lead after five innings, allowed two runs, four hits and no walks, while striking out four.

Matthew Hobgood pitched two innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win for Delmarva.

The Suns outhit the Shorebirds 7-6, led by two singles each by McQuillan and Stephen Perez.
