Washington County Sheriff's Office is warning people about prepaid card scam

April 03, 2013

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about a scam involving Green Dot prepaid cards.

The scam involves the victims being told that they have won a sweepstakes prize. To collect the prizes, victims are told they must purchase a Green Dot card with a certain money value, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Carly Hose said.

In the most recent case, the victim was told to purchase a Green Dot card worth $750, Hose said.

After victims purchase the cards, the person operating the scam obtains the number off the Green Dot card from the victim, then makes off with the money, leaving the victim with no balance, Hose said.

Hose urged people to use caution when dealing with unsolicited phone calls and to never give out personal information over the phone.

Hose said she has been handling one or two complaints a day about the scam.
