Phyllis L. Dowler, 88, of Hagerstown, and formerly of Charleston, W.Va., died Monday, April 1, 2013, at Emeritus Senior Living Center.

Born Dec. 28, 1924, in Sulphur Springs, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Bertha (Campbell) Bittikofer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine P. Dowler; and a brother, Robert Bittikofer.

Always active in church through the years, she taught Sunday school, sang in the church choirs and was a member of women's circle groups. She was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Williamsport.

She was a graduate of Center College Business School, and retired in 1982 from the West Virginia Department of Education in Charleston.

She was a member of the Bona Vista Garden Club in Charleston.

In addition to her work, Phyllis' focus was her family and her home. The consummate homemaker, she loved to work in the garden, cook, play the piano and sing. Her first love was sewing clothing and she made many of her own and her daughters' clothes, including daughter Marsha's wedding gown and Susie and April's bridesmaids' dresses.

In later years, she and her husband traveled throughout the United States and Canada.

She is survived by three daughters, Marsha Dowler Vogel and husband, John, of Westminster, Susan Dowler Wengenroth of Brunswick, and April L. Dowler and husband, John League, of Williamsport; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday, April 4, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 10813 Donelson Drive, Williamsport, Md., with the Rev. Mark A. Sandell officiating.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 3, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, Md.
