Boonsboro to change trash collection company and frequency of pick-up

BOONSBORO — Boonsboro Town Council members decided Monday night to increase the frequency of the town’s curbside recycling service.

Boonsboro currently has twice-a-week trash pick-up and recycling every other week, but council members decided to use a new trash collection company that will collect trash once a week and recyclables once a week.

The town's current one-year trash contract with Allied Waste is up for renewal at the end of June, town officials have said.

The council decided to seek bids on two types of service, one that would keep the current setup, and also decided to seek bids on once-a-week recycling and once-a-week trash pick-up.

The current trash service with Allied Waste costs the town about $156,000 a year, but the new service from Apple Valley Waste will cost the town about $118,000 annually.

Town council member Janeen Solberg said she is encouraged by the town’s decision to increase its rate of recycling and the savings the town can enjoy from the switch.

The new service will start after July 1, Town Manager Debra Smith said. The new service will not change the $15 per-quarter charge town residents pay for trash service, Smith said.

Town council member Cynthia Kauffman was the only council member to vote against the new service. Kauffman said she was not happy how the bid process was set up for trash service.
