Two receive county youth awards

The Washington County Office of Community Grant Management presented Jeison Torres and Madison Gaines with the Washington County Commissioners’ Youth Meritorious Award during the commissioners’ meeting Tuesday.

Jeison is an eighth-grade student at Western Heights Middle School in Hagerstown.

Ms. Martin, Mr. Michael and Ms. Church-Parker nominated Jeison for overcoming “academic obstacles and negative peer pressure to greatly improve his educational achievements.” They also said that Jeison has shown “positive leadership in a humble manner.”

Madison is an eighth-grade student at Springfield Middle School in Williamsport.

Ms. Joyce nominated Madison for her outstanding academic achievement. Madison is enrolled in all merit-level classes and is taking geometry and Spanish for high school credit. She is in the AVID program for high-achieving, first-generation college applicants.
