Hawks snap skid

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Hagerstown Community College snapped a six-game losing streak with a pair of wins in a doubleheader sweep of Anne Arundel.

Garrett Sprankle had two hits and an RBI, and Tyler Walter and Devin Schaeffer each hit an RBI single in an opening 4-2 win for the Hawks. Tanner Partlow (5-1) pitched a five-hitter with four strikeouts.

Eric Schanzenbacher had two hits and an RBI, and Walter drove in two in the second game for HCC (18-13), which won another 4-2 decision.

Shepherd 7, West Liberty 3

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Shepherd plated four runs in the sixth inning to rally past West Liberty (11-12, 7-5) in West Virginia Conference action, finishing off a three-game sweep in the weekend series.

Ryan Messina went 3-for-4 with a home run, T.J. Weisenberg hit a two-run single, and Jake Cook and Chad Murphy each had two hits and drove in a run for the Rams (11-13, 8-3).



COLLEGE SOFTBALL

West Virginia Wesleyan 4-4, Shepherd 3-0

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — West Virginia Wesleyan rallied to beat Shepherd University in eight innings in the opener of a West Virginia Conference doubleheader, then shut out the Rams in the nightcap.

Shepherd (9-17, 0-2) took a 3-0 lead on three hits in the third inning of the opener. Savannah Snyder hit an RBI double and Kass Taylor added an RBI single.

The Bobcats (15-9, 2-0) scored a run in the first on a sacrifice fly, then added a run in the third on Emily Bennett’s RBI single. In the sixth, pinch-runner Rachel Ramsey scored on a single by Alex Furr to tie the game.

Furr’s second RBI single — and fourth hit in the game — scored Ashely Hurey with the winning run in the eighth.

Carly Schmidt had two hits for the Rams. Shannon Lyons (4-5) went the distance but took the loss.

In the nightcap, Snyder had Shepherd’s only two hits.



PREP BASEBALL

Saint James 3-7, Hancock 0-2

HANCOCK — Saint James extended its unbeaten start to 6-0 with a pair of wins over Hancock.

In the opener, Brett Vitkun spun a three-hitter over five innings, striking out seven during a nifty 51-pitch performance with no walks.

Ryan Brown and Bobby Leatherman each had run-scoring hits for Saint James.

In the second game, the Saints had only two hits but took advantage of five hit batsmen and a pair of walks.

A single by Nico Gentile and a Hancock throwing error from the outfield allowed the Saints to break a 2-2 tie in the third inning.

Ben Holland and Tyler George combined on a one-hitter, with Tanner Faith getting the only hit for Hancock (1-2).

North Hagerstown 6, Atholton 5

NEW MARKET, Md. — Andrew Yacyk struck out five to lead North Hagerstown over Atholton.

Austin Stone had three hits, two RBIs, two stolen bases and scored a run, Troy Carbaugh had three hits, Mark Grunberg scored two runs and Cole Conrad pitched an inning of relief to pick up the save for the Hubs.

IJAMSVILLE, Md. — Zach Poffenberger had two hits and four strikeouts to lead Boonsboro past Urbana.

CUMBERLAND, Md. — The Leopards found themselves on the losing end of two close games.

In a nine-inning loss to Mountain Ridge, Garrett Spinks and Zach Krall had two hits each for Smithsburg. Allegany won on a walk-off bloop single.

In the loss to Allegany, Justin Smith had two hits and Kyle Dinterman had two RBIs for the Leopards. Allegany won on a safety squeeze bunt in the seventh.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Martinsburg swept East Fairmont in a doubleheader.

In the opener, Chris Miller went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Jeremy Madon’s RBI single in the fourth inning gave the Bulldogs the lead. Clemet Powell — who scored on Madon’s single — had a two-run double for Martinsburg. Madon finished with two hits.

In the second game, Tyler Mason hit an RBI triple, Mitchell Henson had a two-run double and Madon added an RBI single for the Bulldogs (6-4). Henson finished with two hits.

INWOOD, W.Va. — Nick Haman pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Musselman to a shutout of Southern Garrett in the opener of a doubleheader sweep.

Thomas Presley had a double and two RBIs, Jacob Whitmore had two hits and two RBIs, and Maverick Keller added an RBI triple in the opener.

In the second game, Matt Parker had six strikeouts, Jarin Jenkins had three RBIs, Ashton Meyers had two hits and three RBIs, and Adam Pritt had two RBIs and scored three runs for the Applemen.

BROOKLANDVILLE, Md. — Mercersburg Academy exploded for 10 runs in the first inning of a rout of Friends School, before shutting out St. Paul’s in the St. Paul’s School tournament.

In the win over Friends, Brad Wastler had five RBIs, Colin Gibbons-Fly had three hits, including a two-run homer, Lorenzo Vazquez had two hits, including a home run, Richard Grace had two hits and Mike Collins had six strikeouts.

In the win over St. Paul’s, Gibbons-Fly had four hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs, Trustin Riley and Vazquez had two hits each and Tiger Smith had nine strikeouts for the Blue Storm (5-1).

BOYS LACROSSE

Saint James 7, Smithsburg 4

ST. JAMES — Kyle Neale scored three goals and Justin Pank added two goals and an assist to help Saint James get past Smithsburg.

Leighton Younger had a goal and an assist for the Saints (3-2), while Austin Fahey added a goal. Will Smith made 15 saves and Henry Smith had five ground balls. Pank won seven of his nine faceoffs.

Garrett Brenk had three goals to lead the Leopards (1-1). Josh Thomas had a goal and an assist, Ryan Karroll had two assists, Zach Schaeffer made nine saves and Justin Buckley had five ground balls.
