Boonsboro's Duncan signs with JMU

  • Boonsboro senior Abby Duncan, seated center, signed a letter of intent Friday to continue her track and field career at the NCAA Division I level with James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. Duncan, a sprinter, has won seven individual Maryland Class 1A state titles in her career. She owns all-time Washington County records for 100 meters (12.09 seconds) and 400 meters (56.86) and has twice been named The Herald-Mail's Washington County Girls Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Duncan, who suffered a torn ACL in her right knee playing soccer early last fall, is hoping to return to the track this spring after missing the indoor season.

PREP BASEBALL

Musselman 12, Martinsburg 2

INWOOD, W.Va. — Chris Schleuss pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Musselman in a five-inning win over Martinsburg on Friday.

Jacob Whitmore had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs for the Applemen (6-3), who trailed 2-0 before erupting for 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Thomas Presley added two hits and two RBIs in the victory.

Curtis Miller had a triple for the Bulldogs (4-4).

Jefferson 13, Moorefield 6

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. — Paul Witt and Sean Spots each had two hits and three RBIs to lead Jefferson past Moorefield.

Kalen Nehler also had two hits and Brandt Petrie had two RBIs in the victory.

Smithsburg 9, Manchester Valley 4

MANCHESTER, Md. — Smithsburg scored eight runs over the second and third innings to beat Manchester Valley on Thursday.

Cody Reifel pitched four innings of shutout relief for the win, allowing only one hit.

The Leopards (2-1) pounded out 11 hits, two each by Garrett Spinks, James Shifler and Zach Krall. Krall, Spinks and Dylan Durning each had two RBIs.


PREP SOFTBALL

Jefferson 15, Saint James 0

ST. JAMES — Jenna Witt and Shelby McTighe combined on a two-hitter for Jefferson in a three-inning shutout of Saint James.

Witt added two hits, including a double, and Casey Lyons had three hits for the Cougars (4-2), who scored 10 runs in the first.

Alyssa Blank had two hits for the Saints (0-2), who pulled off a 5-1-6 triple play.

Smithsburg 10, Catoctin 8

THURMONT, Md. — Joshua Thomas had four goals and an assist for Smithsburg as the Leopards won their season opener Thursday at Catoctin.

Garrett Ghafir had two goals and an assist for Smithsburg, while Ryan Karroll also had two goals, Garrett Brenk and Justin Buckley each had a goal, Donovan Lawrence added an assist and Zachary Schaeffer had eight saves in the victory.

Gaels’ Daigneault wins 1,600

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — St. Maria Goretti’s Luke Daigneault won the boys 1,600-meter run in 4:48.49 at the Berkeley Springs Invitational on Thursday.

Hancock’s Sydniy Mabey tied for first in the girls high jump (4 feet, 4 inches). Also for the Panthers, Ally Childers placed second in the girls 300 hurdles (55.34) and Liam Faith placed second in the boys long jump (18-6) and contributed to the third-place 4x100 relay team (48.77).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Shepherd sweeps West Liberty

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Shepherd pounded out 24 hits on the day en route to a WVIAC doubleheader sweep of West Liberty (12-10, 10-3). The Rams won the first game 14-1 and the second game 11-0.

Mark McCormick went 3-for-4 in the first game for Shepherd, while Kyle Porter went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, Ryan Messina hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs, Brandon Coffey hit a three-run double and Jake Cook had three RBIs.

Cody Bumbaugh, McCormick and Michael Lott each homered for the Rams (11-12, 7-3) in the second game.


BRIEF

Williamsport Nationals tryouts

The Williamsport Nationals baseball team will hold tryouts on April 14 at 2 p.m. at Williamsport High School’s baseball field. The rain date is April 21.

The tryouts for players ages 15-17. Players cannot turn 18 before Dec. 31 this year.
