Two Martinsburg brothers to compete in West Virginia State Math Field Day

March 28, 2013

KEYSER, W.Va. — Two Martinsburg brothers are among the many Eastern Panhandle students who qualified Wednesday for the West Virginia State Math Field Day in April.

David Zollinger and Robert Zollinger took first place in their age groups to qualify for the state competiton.

In addition, their brother, Matthew, is an alternate for the state competition. There were approximately 250 students in grades four to 12 who competed in the Regional Math Field Day at Potomac State College in Keyser.

Participants represented Berkeley, Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, Mineral, Morgan and Pendleton counties.

Students competed in several activities, including a written test, mental computation and estimation for grades four to nine; and exam questions and short-answer problems for grades 10 to 12.

The top three students from the region in grades four to nine will compete at the state competition, scheduled for April 26 and 27 at West Virginia State University in Institute, W.Va. The top 10 students in grades 10 to 12 will go on to the state competition.

Two alternates were named for each of the grades from four to nine and 10 alternates were named for grades 10 to 12. They will have the chance to participate in the state event if one of the students who placed is unable to attend.

Many teachers dedicate long hours to organizing the regional competition, creating and proctoring tests, and preparing their students for the event. Each year, the location of the regional contest alternates between Potomac State College and Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W.Va. The professors at those universities design the test for grades 10 to 12.
