GREENCASTLE, Pa. — Final preparations are under way for Saturday’s Waynesboro (Pa.) Area Gala Cancer Auction, an event that has raised nearly $1.8 million for the American Cancer Society since its inception 32 years ago.
Live bidding begins Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Green Grove Gardens off Pa. 16 outside Greencastle. A silent auction starts at 4 p.m.
The auction moved this year from downtown Waynesboro, according to Jill Kessler of the fundraiser’s steering committee.
“We’re hoping to draw from the Waynesboro/Greencastle area,” Kessler said. “Because it’s not in downtown Waynesboro, unfortunately, we’re hoping to have people (from Greencastle) who wouldn’t otherwise come.”
This year’s theme is Time for Cancer to Take a Hike.
A key item being auctioned is a New York City trip. Aero-Smith of Martinsburg, W.Va., has donated a package for four couples. It includes private air travel aboard Aero-Smith’s executive turboprop aircraft from Hagerstown Regional Airport, a limousine ride to the city hotel, four hotel rooms and eight tickets to a Broadway show.
