Young writers program

As part of the upcoming Nora Roberts Writing Institute at Hagerstown Community College, HCC will offer a Young Writers Institute for high school students entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade.

The program will be held Aug. 2 and 3, the same weekend as the Nora Roberts program, and will feature a series of workshops and events geared toward aspiring young writers. Workshops will include fiction-crafting and publishing, as well as the opportunity to network with other teen writers. Cost is $185 per person.

Participants also have the opportunity to take part in a writing contest.

The “What’s Your Backstory?” contest asks students to submit an original work of fiction in 1,000 words or less featuring a main character in a critical moment.

The grand-prize winner will receive free tuition to the Young Writers Institute and a $50 gift card to The winning entry will also be read during the opening session of the Nora Roberts program on Aug. 2. Two additional runners-up will receive a 50 percent discount on tuition to the Young Writers Institute and a $25 gift card to


All contest participants will receive a free copy of their published work in the contest magazine, “Back Talk,” which will be distributed during the conference. The contest deadline is June 1.

Ballroom dance

Clare Domer’s ballroom dance will be held Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. at Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion on Northern Avenue.

Admission costs $5.

Church plans dinner

The community is invited to a seder dinner at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Thursday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. 

The congregation will celebrate the Passover.    

The meal will consist of soup and bread prepared by the Worship Ministry Team. There is no cost. 

The church is off Jefferson Boulevard between Eastern Boulevard and Robinwood Drive.

Easter egg hunt

Covenant Presbyterian will host an Easter egg hunt for those ages 12 and younger Sunday at 11:30 a.m. 

Baskets will be provided. Eggs for toddlers and infants will be hidden in the garden by the church entrance. All other eggs will be found anywhere on church property. 

All eggs are plastic filled with candy. There is no cost.

Easter event

Ringgold Church of Christ will present an Easter Eggstravaganza Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Breakfast will be at 9 a.m.

The event is geared for those ages 2 through fifth grade. The church is at 14420 Barkdoll Road in Hagerstown.
