Mail Call - March 25

March 24, 2013

“I really feel so sad today. I don’t know what is happening to our country. First, you can’t buy Twinkies anymore. Now you can’t take a tour of the White House. And to make matters worse, you can’t buy Gibble’s potato chips. I just read today that someone at The Herald-Mail is really heartbroken about it.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m calling about the article about the city workers that was in Monday’s paper, March 11, about a pay raise. I work (elsewhere and) we have not received a step pay raise since 1987. So I don’t know what the city workers are complaining about. Try to go 25 years without a pay raise.”
— Falling Waters, W.Va.

“Several years ago, I was at Hancock High School. There would be meetings after school, at the BOE. School was over at 3:30, the meetings started at 4 p.m. I was always late. It will be even worse if the BOE is downtown. If it is at the Allegheny Power building on the Downsville Pike, I could drive down the interstate.”
— Halfway

“Another downfall for the country. First my Twinkies, now my Gibble’s chips. I think it’s George W. Bush’s fault.”
— Greencastle, Pa.

“I just want to say that the people who call Mail Call are really smart. They know how to run things, and what I want to do is (start) the Mail Call (Club). If we could meet every Monday morning at McDonald’s at the mall and talk about things, we could start the Mail Call Club, and we could meet and talk about things. You all have some good ideas. Just put it in Mail Call and we’ll meet on Mondays at the mall.”
— Hagerstown

“I think the mayor of New York, Mayor Bloomberg, there ought to be more mayors like him. I get tears in my eyes when I go out and see these little children being obese and overweight, and they can hardly even walk, they wobble when they walk. I start crying because I feel so sorry for them. We need more mayors like Bloomberg.”
— Hagerstown

“We do not need any more stray cats dropped off here in the lower part of Mount Lena, at the barn. If they don’t want them, take them to the SPCA and have them put to sleep.”
— Mount Lena

“Concerning a local landmark construction company, and the desire to put the BOE downtown, the question is this: Do any members of that company live in the city limits of Hagerstown?”
— Halfway

“I mean no disrespect to anybody, but with all the other religions that we have in this country, why is it so important that we have to see all this stuff about a new pope being elected? The Catholics out there have their own means of finding it out, so why do the rest of us ... to put on the TV for everybody to see, that really are not interested. Just a question, no disrespect.”
— Falling Waters, W.Va.

“President Obama better beware, if Ben Carson runs for president. Carson is not afraid to criticize Obama’s programs. He offers better solutions, and no one can use the racial bias excuse to oppose him. Very soon you will hear the media start to attack Carson like they did Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney.”
— Clear Spring

“Recently, an article on page 1 of the paper notes Gov. O’Malley’s support for banning the death penalty for convicted killers. On the same page, another article about abortion informs us that in the state of Maryland, abortions on demand are available through month nine of the pregnancy. Here you have the governor trying to save the life of convicted killers, but allowing. ... I wish the newspaper would examine this contradictory view of life by our governor.”
— Williamsport

“As an area resident, I have a question for my fellow taxpayers and voters. Why do we even have elections, when it comes to the county? The reason I question this is, the people who make the final decisions are in appointed positions. Also, why isn’t the public notified of the agenda, when they want to create new jobs, which the taxpayers pay the salary? Two out of the last three job creations were filled by people from out of state, who do not contribute to the local tax base. Just a question that needs answered.”
