Samuel L. Griffith, 89, of Keedysville, Md., passed from this life on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.

Born on Nov. 17, 1923, in Keedysville, he was the son of the late Frisby Fillmore and Sarah Catherine (Lewis) Griffith.

Mr. Griffith was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II, and was a former member of the Clopper-Michael American Legion Post 10 in Boonsboro.

He was employed with Standard Building System in Point of Rocks, Md., for 14 years, Bester Long Construction in Hagerstown for 10 years, and also had worked for M.J. Grove Company in Frederick, Md.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret V. (Witmer) Griffith; five children, Samuel L. Griffith Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Fairplay, David L. Griffith and his wife, Patricia, of Keedysville, Darlene L. Griffith of Hagerstown, Michael L. Griffith and his wife, Linda, of Boonsboro, and Paul L. Griffith of Williamsport; one sister, Dorothy C. Dodson and her husband, Charles, of Keedysville. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Rosie Bowers, Martha L. Rudy and Mary V. Griffith; and five brothers, Kenneth, Leo, Lloyd, Wilmer, and Gardner Griffith.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 25, 2013, at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 17636 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. Rev. Ernest E. Witmer will officiate.

Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2013, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Md.

Memorial donations may be made to Clopper-Michael American Legion Post 10, 710 N. Main St., Boonsboro, MD 21713.
