Protective order expansion bill clears Md. Senate

March 21, 2013

A bill introduced by Sen. Christopher B. Shank, R-Washington, to increase the scope of a protective order to better protect some victims of domestic violence has cleared the Senate and is now headed to the House of Delegates for consideration.

Shank, has said previously that SB 490 was a response to some incidents in Washington County including the shooting death of Heather Harris, a Hagerstown resident who was shot dead by her ex-boyfriend in June 2011.

Under current law, Harris would not be eligible for a protective order.

The bill, if it becomes law, would protect victims such as Harris and others who are in or were formerly in intimate relationships and not eligible for a protective order.
