Wednesday wasn't exactly the ideal day, weatherwise, to start off spring, but the season did officially arrive at 7:02 a.m.

So as it has become the custom, Coffman Nursing Home officials took about 25 of its residents across the street to Rita’s Italian Ice on Pennsylvania Avenue to mark the first day of spring.

The group made the trip a little quicker this year due to the chilly weather, according to Jan Eccard, who along with Brandy Beard are the two activity directors at the nursing home.

Hagerstown City Police helped with the crossing and Rita’s treated the group to a free ice treat.

The nursing home is at 1304 Pennsylvania Ave.
