Letters to the Editor - March 19

March 19, 2013

Nation, state lack competent leadership

To the editor:

Publishing Mr. Garrett’s letter today (March 17) should be cause for those who have been criticizing your paper as being a bit left of center to pause. I have never met or spoken with Mr. Garrett, but his opinion so closely resembles mine I had to make note. It was a straightforward, and I believe, honest assessment of the goal of this president and his “advisers.”

Personally, I think Mr. Garrett should have sent it to those representatives of ours who are always searching for a camera to babble to, such as Mr. Van Hollen and the gang of three.  I see very little competence in this nation’s, and this state’s, leadership and problem-solving ability.

I’ve been voting for more than 50 years — some winners, some losers — but have never seen anything like today’s crop of politicians. This present attitude of “Well, the president said it, so it must be true” will haunt us for decades.

Feinstein should stop gun-control nonsense

To the editor:

I urge U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein to stop this nonsense on gun control. I agree that the killings need to stop, but this will not stop a single death and likely will cause more as some will not have the ability to defend themselves.

Feinstein claims she has studied the Constitution and I respect that. We all should from time to time. I also strongly urge her to read James Madison’s papers on the subject, which give ample and precise background as to why the Second Amendment was written and why it was inserted so near the top.

Its purpose is to prevent exactly what she is attempting to do on gun control. It is to protect the populace from a tyrannical government, which is precisely what she is attempting to establish, knowingly or unknowingly.

Feinstein should obey the law of the land and stop trying to circumvent it. It’s there for all of our protection.
