Introduction to Storm Water Management — Today, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. George Hurd, environmental Extension educator in Pa., and the Master Gardeners will present this introductory class on backyard storm water management. Topics to be introduced include storm water definition, rain barrels, rain gardens, mosquito control, drought tolerant gardens and composting. The class fee is $10.


Turf Workshop — Wednesday, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Last summer’s weather extremes could have had a major impact on your lawn. Master Gardener Bob Hyatt teaches the best way to have a healthy lawn regardless of what Mother Nature throws your way. Class fee is $10.


2013 American Chestnut Grower School — The workshop will be Friday, April 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Penn State Extension office in Franklin County, 181 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, Pa. Beekeeping course — The Franklin County Beekeepers Association is conducting a five-session shortcourse on beginning beekeeping.

The Thursday evening classroom sessions will be on March 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Franklin County Ag Heritage Building, which is at 185 Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg, Pa.

There will also be a field day at a local apiary on Saturday, March 23. Cost for the shortcourse is $35 per family.

Registration is required and is limited to the first 50 people. You do not have to be a member of the Franklin County Beekeepers Association to register.

Registration includes a beekeeping manual, disposable gloves, refreshments and membership in the Franklin County Beekeepers Association.

4-H Stream Team Leaders Sought — Penn State Extension is looking for volunteers for its 4-H Stream Team program, which guides youth in learning about local water resources and encourages them to become water stewards and involved citizens. For more information, call 717-263-9226.


Strong Women Winter 2013 Classes Forming — Three locations: Fayetteville (New Guilford Brethren in Christ) —  Mondays and Wednesdays. 9 to 10 a.m.; Shippensburg (Memorial Lutheran Church) — Tuesdays and Thursdays, at 9 a.m.; and two sessions in Chambersburg (Chambersburg Church of the Brethren) — Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:45 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m.

Annie’s Project — Tuesday nights through March 19, Adams County Extension Office in Gettysburg, Pa. Annie’s Project is a national Cooperative Extension workshop series designed to empower women who are farm owners or partners, or thinking about becoming one.

Cost of the program is $75 per person for all eight sessions. Class size is limited. Registration is required; to sign up, go to agsci.psu.edu/annies-project or call 717-270-4391.
