State group to host housing workshops in Berkeley this week

March 19, 2013

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The West Virginia Fair Housing Action Network (WVFHAN) will present two free workshops in Martinsburg this week to provide information to consumers and housing professionals on fair housing and tenant rights in West Virginia.

The first workshop, on Tenant and Landlords: Rights and Responsibilities, will be held Wednesday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Mountaineer Room at Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center, WVU-East. This workshop will focus on the new state landlord/tenant manual developed with the support and assistance of the WV Office of Attorney General Civil Rights Division, WV Senior Legal Aid, and other partners.

The old manual had not been updated for almost 20 years. This version of the manual includes everything up to and including bills passed during the 2012 legislative session, and has sections focusing on evictions, leases, repairs and other issues of concern in rental properties.

This workshop is open to the public and is aimed at landlords, tenants, housing professionals, social service agencies, municipal authorities, consumer and housing advocates.

The second workshop, Fair Housing: It’s Not an Option, It’s the law, will be held from 9:30 to noon Thursday, at the Holiday Inn on Foxcroft Avenue.

This workshop will focus on the federal and state Fair Housing Acts and include information on what constitutes discrimination and who are the protected classes.

There is no fee to attend either of these workshops. For more information or to register, call WVFHAN at 304-296-6091 or visit their website at www.wvfairhousing.org.
