March 18, 2013

A 13-year-old boy has been referred to juvenile authorities in connection with fires set in the hallways of two apartment buildings on Selema Drive on Sunday afternoon, the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal said in a news release Monday.

The fires, set in the hallways of two Woodbridge Apartments buildings at 11515 and 11545 Selema Drive, were quickly extinguished, the fire marshal said.

The fires, reported at about 5 p.m. in both buildings, involved Pokemon cards being set on fire, causing carpet damage, the release said.

The Funkstown Volunteer Fire Department put out the fires in about two minutes, the release said.

The boy was referred to the Washington County Department of Juvenile Services on charges of second-degree malicious burning, malicious destruction of property and reckless endangerment, the release said.

The boy was released to the custody of his parents, according to the release.

The fires caused about $200 in damage to hallway carpets at 11515 and 11545 Selema Drive, a pair three-story multi-unit apartment buildings at Woodbridge Apartments, the release said.
