Walter leads HCC to a split

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Tyler Walter had three hits and three RBIs in the second game of a doubleheader as Hagerstown Community College scored five runs in the first inning and earned a 7-2 victory over Jefferson (N.Y.) after losing the opener 5-2 on Sunday.

Jarrett Sprankle had two hits and an RBI for the Hawks (14-7) in the nightcap victory. Kevin Bair (3-0) got his second win in as many days, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in six effective innings.

Walter and Sprankle each had two hits in HCC’s opening loss. Jordan Nicewarner and Devin Schaeffer had an RBI each.

Shepherd 5-3, Wheeling Jesuit 4-1

TORONTO, Ohio — Shepherd University swept Wheeling Jesuit in a WVIAC doubleheader.

Ryan Messina and Tyler Thomas each had two hits and an RBI for the Rams in the first game.

In the second game, Michael Lott, Chad Murphy and T.J. Weisenburg each had two hits, Jake Cook had two RBIs and Messina hit an RBI double for Shepherd (8-9, 4-0).


COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Mercyhurst 11-8, HCC 0-0

Mercyhurst’s Ronette Claar pitched a perfect game with 12 strikeouts in the opening game of a doubleheader sweep against Hagerstown Community College on Sunday. Each game was stopped after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Alex Puckly pitched a four-hit shutout for Mercyhurst in the second game. Tylisa Green went 2-for-2 for HCC (5-3).
