Humane society to host animal control officer and animal care technician academy

The Humane Society of Washington County will host the New England Academy of Animal Control Officers in order to bring an animal control officer and animal care technician academy to Hagerstown. 

The animal control officer academy will be held Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 10.

The animal care technician portion will be held Monday May 13 through Friday, May 17. 

There is a separate euthanasia technician certification within the technician portion. 

There are separate classes on basic animal cruelty investigation and chemical capture and restraint. 

The academy is open to the public with a $495 tuition cost for the two- week course.  Each portion can be taken separately at a cost of $250 per course.

The two (4 1/2 day) courses, include the day to day workings of an animal control officer.  Topics include rabies control and identification, animal bite and dangerous dog investigation, common breeds and markings, animal cruelty investigation, animal hoarding and chemical immobilization. The technician course includes general care, health and nutrition, parasitology, familiarization with common diseases, treatments and medications and euthanasia technician certification. The technician block can be taken by those who desire the knowledge to take better care of their own personal animals, or to work in an animal-care facility.
