Leitersburg Cinemas continued growth in 2012

March 10, 2013

Leitersburg Cinemas, at 20145 Leitersburg Pike in Hagerstown, continued its growth in 2012.

The cinemas were reopened in June 2010 by Rich Daughtridge and Dave Schleigh, founders of High Rock.

One of the largest facility improvements late last year was the conversion to digital projection equipment and sound in eight of Leitersburg’s 10 theaters. The conversion was in response to film companies switching from 35 mm film to digital, requiring all theaters nationwide to convert by the end of 2013. Daughtridge noted that Leitersburg Cinemas likely will not convert any of its screens to 3D in the near future.

As a result of the digital conversion, which cost nearly $1 million, ticket prices increased slightly on Feb. 22. Ticket prices rose by 50 cents for most options and now range from $5.50 for showtimes before noon to $12 for VIP seating after 5 p.m.

The VIP seating price after 5 p.m. did not change; and VIP seating after 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday now includes a free popcorn.

According to year-end figures for 2012, more than 185,000 tickets were sold throughout the year. After hitting the lowest attendance in 16 years in 2011, domestic box office sales for 2012 increased by about 5.6 percent, according to www.moviefone.com. Beating the national average, Leitersburg Cinemas’ ticket sales increased by 44 percent in 2012.

The theater’s dinner and a movie events continue to be popular. For the Valentine’s weekend this year, more than 500 combined tickets were sold for events on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night of that weekend, during which guests were greeted with live music in the lobby, a popcorn appetizer and a Valentine’s dinner served to their VIP seats while they watched one of three movies.

Leitersburg Cinemas soon will announce its summer schedule of $1 kids’ movies, which will be screened on select Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the summer. During those showings, popcorn costs $2 and drinks cost $3.
