Q: We have seen April and May designated as Small Business Month 2013. Please enlighten us.

A: The U.S. Small Business Administration and SCORE have small-business events spread over both months. Watch your local media for specific times and locations.

In Hagerstown, the local SCORE chapter has designated the month of April for celebration of Small Business Month. This will be part of its yearlong celebration of local small businesses, along with recognition of the chapter’s 30th anniversary in Hagerstown.

Chapter co-chairperson Marty Mattare pointed out that the chapter’s yearlong campaign is designed to raise public awareness of SCORE and the local small-business community.

“We often hear people say that they have heard of SCORE, but are unable to recall anything specific,” she said. “Therefore, we have decided to present a number of community events to help Hagerstown and the surrounding area get to know SCORE and their local small businesses better.”

Chapter co-chairperson Richard Walton talked about some of the events SCORE Hagerstown is planning, including a monthly radio program, “SCORE Talks Small Business,” featuring local small-business owners who have benefited from SCORE services.

“We will go ‘on the road’ with our ‘Coffee Break with SCORE’ event to acquaint area officials, businesses and residents with our menu of services,” Walton said. “Our SCORE Speakers Bureau is available for booking by area organizations. We will again be having our annual awards event to honor local small businesses for their successes in start-ups and business growth.”

The 2013 award winners from this year’s SCORE Hagerstown event in April will be featured on the “SCORE Talks Small Business” programs in May and June. The program airs on the first Tuesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. on WJEJ-1240 AM.

SCORE has more than 360 chapters throughout the country that provide free small-business mentoring, and low-cost educational seminars and workshops. For more information, contact SCORE Hagerstown at 301-766-2043 or go to www.scorehagerstown.org.
