VERO BEACH, Fla. — C.J. Owings’ RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Hagerstown Community College a victory over Ontario, but the Hawks blew leads of 8-2 after six innings and 12-6 after the top of the eighth in a tough loss to Miami-Hamilton on Saturday.

In the opener, HCC (9-2) tied Ontario at 5 with a four-run bottom of the fourth. A two-run double by Tyler Walter with the bases loaded was the key hit.

The game went into extra innings, and the Hawks loaded the bases on two hit batters and a bunt single with no outs to set up Owings’ walk-off hit.

Eric Schanzenbacher had three hits and Walter had two hits and three RBIs for HCC. Owings and Drew DeShong each had two hits. Dylan Eyler (4-0) got the win with four shutout innings in relief, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three.

Miami-Hamilton scored 11 runs in its final three at-bats to rally past the Hawks later Saturday. HCC made costly errors in allowing four runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Dylan Dunn had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Hawks. DeShong had two hits, and Walter and Jordan Nicewarner each drove in two runs.

Shepherd 21-1, Lock Haven 4-3

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Shepherd University split a doubleheader with Lock Haven.

The Rams (3-9) used a 16-hit attack for a win in the opener, breaking it open with 11 runs in the fifth inning.  A grand slam by Tyler Thomas, a three-run double by Jake Cook and a two-run single by T.J. Weisenburg highlighted the rally.

Cook went 4-for-6 and drove in five runs for Shepherd. Ryan Messina went 3-for-4 with three doubles, while Weisenburg was 3-for-3.

Lock Haven (1-4) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap, then scored in the sixth for a 3-1 lead that stood up.


Chambersburg’s Hammond wins PIAA state title

HERSHEY, Pa. — Chambersburg’s Garett Hammond won a PIAA state title on Saturday.

Hammond defeated Cumberland Valley’s T.C. Warner 8-5 in the championship match at 152 pounds.


Southern Fulton 63, Juniata Valley 30

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — For the third straight year, Southern Fulton reached the Sweet 16 in the PIAA Class A state tournament with an easy first-round win over Juniata Valley.

Ashley Roman led Southern Fulton (24-3) with 23 points, her second-best scoring output of the season. She finished off a double-double with 12 rebounds.

Macey Hollenshead continued her string of scoring in double figures in every game this year, hitting for 18 and also contributing seven assists and four steals.

Taelor Morton also scored 12 points for the Indians, who will play Halifax, a winner over Octaivation, on Wednesday. The PIAA indicated that game could be held at Chambersburg.
