COLLEGE BASEBALL

Getaway day came a couple days early for Hagerstown Community College.

HCC scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-2 win over Shenandoah on Tuesday in a game that was shortened to seven innings because the Hawks had to catch a plane.

The Hawks are flying to Vero Beach, Fla., for their annual spring trip. They’ll begin play there on Friday.

“We weren’t supposed to leave town until Thursday, but with the snow coming in, they bumped us up two days,” said HCC coach Scott Jennings. “We had to get out of Dodge.”

HCC (6-1) left on a hot streak, winning five straight games after splitting a season-opening doubleheader.

Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, C.J. Owings drew a one-out walk, Eric Schanzenbacher followed with a base hit and Dylan Dunn was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Tyler Walter tied the game with a sacrifice fly before Garrett Sprankle gave the Hawks the lead with a two-out single to score Schanzenbacher.

Dylan Eyler pitched two perfect innings in relief to earn the save for the Hawks. Thomas Rose (1-0) earned the win, allowing two runs and three hits in five innings.

Schanzenbacher and Devin Schaeffer each had two hits.
