Mail Call - March 4

March 04, 2013

“Regarding trash at Garland Groh: How about people not throwing trash out and on other people’s property in the first place? And does any kind of commissioner or director of agency responsible for codes ever drive up and down our county roads and see abandoned buildings and businesses, and people using their yards for a dump? Take a drive along Broadfording and Rockdale roads, for starters. Washington County is becoming a blight county.”
— Clear Spring

“I’m just calling because I’d like to know, why are people wasting their money on handicapped tags when there’s no place to park downtown in the first place? There’s only like six parking, handicapped parking spaces that I know of downtown, and everybody’s fighting for them. So what is the purpose of getting a handicapped tag when you can never find a parking space? What happened to being able to park at the meters? Someone needs to rethink this.”
— Hagerstown

“I am a senior citizen, and I’ve been starving and shivering all winter, due to the price of fuel oil. No one seems to care, and nothing is being done about it. It’s an outrage.”
— Hagerstown

“I’d like to know who these ... secret shoppers are who go into stores and restaurants and then complain back to the employees, causes the employees to lose their job. Do you all think it’s right? I’d like to hear your comment.”
— Hagerstown

“Hagerstown caller is right: I take God everywhere I go. I call on him when I go to work: God, please don’t let corporate cut the minimum wage pay and hours today. God, please help me afford my overinflated health care costs and premiums. God, please let my doctor accept my health insurance, to treat my cancer. God, please don’t let anyone shoot me. Please let there be clean air to breathe, and clean water to drink. This is the message I leave on Speaker of the House John Boehner’s voice mail. So far, no response.”
— Hagerstown

“This is on oil and gas prices. I see on TV where our great president Obama was interviewed, and asked how come gas and oil is up so much and everything, and his response was to tell people to use less oil, use less gas. ... You people that put him back in office again for another four years, you gotta be nuts, and well, you can put they had to be crazy or something. But the people that put him back in, they’re getting paid back.”
— Hagerstown

“I think the old Sears building at the Long Meadow Shopping Center would make an ample BOE central office. Much, much space to be used, plenty of parking, no hassle. All the sites downtown would cause a lot of confusion, congestion, and (are) hard to get to. Think about the old Sears building. It gives us everything.”
— Washington County

“You know, one thing I like about President Obama, he takes his time and thinks things out, and he doesn’t appoint anybody to his Cabinet that’s a war hog, like John McCain, Lindsey Graham and all them. So that’s why I think he’s going to be all right, and he’s appointing a Cabinet that’s going to do the right thing.”
— Hagerstown

“I see where our President Obama flew down to Florida last weekend to play a round of golf with Tiger Woods. He really doesn’t get it. The country is broke, and he keeps spending money like we’re on top of the world.”
— Williamsport

“An FYI: Just because a person such as a woman has gray hair, please don’t assume that they’re 20 or 30 years older than what they are. I happen to be in my late 40s and I have gray hair. ... Due to the cost, I don’t get it dyed every month, and people assume that I’m a senior citizen because of it. Please look at the person entirely, not that there’s anything wrong with being older, but you know what assumptions, what happens.”
— Hagerstown

“Someone put in Mail Call, said that four Americans were killed under Hillary Clinton’s watch, in Benghazi. What about the 3,000-plus people that were killed under George Bush’s watch on 9/11, 2001?”
— Waynesboro, Pa.

“I’m calling in regard to a call from the Greencastle, Pa., citizen who said, and I quote, ‘It’s as simple as this. More guns, more murders.’ Actually, madam or sir, you’re 180 degrees wrong, because if there are more guns in the hands of innocent and good citizens, there will be fewer murders because those people will, they will be able to protect themselves and those around them, period.”
— Washington County

“I just want to tell the people in the Hagerstown areas and the vicinity, be on the lookout for the smart meters because they’re no good for this state or this country. Get online and just tap in ‘smart meter in Maryland,’ and read up. There’s plenty of information there. Because you’re really going to get taken across if you put the smart meters in. So I’ve put signs on my meters to let them know, no smart meters ... let your elected representatives know you’re against the smart meter.”
— Hagerstown

“Williamsport voters, please remember to get out and vote, Monday, March 4, for your favorite candidate(s). Don’t stay home assuming. Physically make your vote count.”
