Library group to meet

Friends of Washington County Free Library will hold  its bimonthly meeting Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Otterbein United Methodist Church, 108 E. Franklin St., Hagerstown, room 202. 

The meeting is open to the public.  

The featured speaker will be Janlee Viand, branch coordinator, who will talk about her duties as liaison between the branches and administration of the main library. 

She will also talk about her project, which was the move from the main branch downtown while the new library is being constructed.

The group is an all-volunteer organization whose membership aids and promotes the aims and goals of the library.

Losses for the week totaled 36 1/2 pounds for TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 0077.

Eileen Renwick and Pat Hicks were the best TOPS losers. 

The best KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) losers were Maida Law and Mary Jo Kemper.

Judy Purdham won the ha-ha prize. The no-no food for the week is chips.

In the team challenges, team No. 1 was the big winner with losses of 12 3/4 pounds. The Topsy Girls and the Red Hot Mommas tied in losses for the quarter ending in December with 44 1/4 pounds lost for each team.

Barb Trumpower won the monthly get-r-done prize for TOPS and Kemper won for KOPS.

Cindy Ryder presented the program on “Changing Taste.” She said it is possible to learn and relearn to appreciate different foods and their flavors. Flavor perception is affected by smell, appearance and texture, as well as physical surroundings and background noises. She said it is possible to have mind over pallet.

The group meets Monday mornings at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave. in Hagerstown.

Card party

The public is invited to a benefit card party and luncheon at the Women’s Club Wednesday, April 17. The event costs $12, which includes lunch.

Attendees can play any card game or board game, or just come for lunch.

Proceeds benefit Girls Inc. of Hagerstown.

Reservations can be made by calling 301-739-0870 by April 15.

Dinner and auction

Salem Reformed Church will hold a dinner and silent auction in the Family Life Center on Saturday, March 9.

Doors open at 2 p.m. to view and bid on auction items.

Homemade soup, fried chicken, steamers, green beans, fruit cocktail and desserts will be served from 4 to 6 p.m.

Tickets cost $9. Proceeds will help defray the cost of the youth work mission trip this summer.

The church is at 13182 Salem Church Road (off Cearfoss Pike).
