Thumbs up to the students who participated in the annual Washington County Spelling Bee at Western Heights Middle School. These children battled nerves and some tough words to make their parents, teachers and communities proud.

Thumbs up to the Doleman Black Heritage Museum for hosting its fourth annual celebration of Black History Month at The Maryland Theatre. The organization honored 10 people for their inductions into the Washington County and Hagerstown Community College halls of fame.

Thumbs up to Washington County Director of Public Works Joseph Kroboth III, who is retiring from the position he held since 2007. Kroboth’s career in public service includes a decade working for the City of Hagerstown and more than 20 years working for the county.

Thumbs down to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association for continuing to offer an open playoff format for high school basketball. Do you think anyone felt good Monday night after the South Hagerstown girls posted a 79-7 win over Einstein?
