Registration open for fishing tournament

March 02, 2013

CASCADE, Md. — Registration for Fort Ritchie Community Center’s second annual Bass Fishing Tournament is now open.

The tournament will consist of three heats this year: March 16, April 13 and May 11 with anglers competing for more than $15,000 in cash prizes.

Winners of each of heat will be invited to compete in a Championship “Fish Off” on June 22, which will allow boat fishing on Fort Ritchie’s Lake Royer for the first time in 15 years. The 20-acre lake is privately owned and restricts fishing during all other times of the year.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources surveyed the lake in 2010 and found four times the number of fish that normally populate a “good” fishing lake. The lake has since been open for adult fishing just one time: last year’s tournament.

Demand for that tournament was so high, that two additional dates have been added for the 2013 season.

The registration fee costs $50 per angler per heat. Fishing is open to all ages and no license is required. Those ages 15 and younger require parental permission and adult supervision during the tournament.

An angler can sign up for one, two, or all three heats. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top three longest bass in each heat plus lucky tagged fish. Assorted other awards will be given away.

Register by calling 301-241-5085 or by visiting the Fort Ritchie Community Center courtesy desk during regular business hours.

Only 125 persons will be allowed to enter each heat, allowing plenty of room for anglers to spread out around the lake.

Funds raised by the tournament benefit the nonprofit Fort Ritchie Community Center.
