Boaze to speak at Historical Society meeting

Living history interpreter Raleigh Boaze will speak to the Sharpsburg Historical Society at Sharpsburg Town Hall Tuesday, March 12.

Boaze will appear in the persona of a backwoodsman dressed in period clothing and carrying the weapons and accouterments a hunter of the time would have carried.

Boaze will discuss the events surrounding Joseph Chapline’s 1763 chartering of Sharpsburg, the oldest town in what is now Washington County.

Boaze will describe the frontier settlers’ strife at the hands of the Native Americans aligned with the French, the French and Indian War, and the period leading up to the American Revolution.

Boaze has spoken to groups in Maryland and Virginia, including as Flagon and Trencher, the descendants of Colonial tavern keepers.

Fire company to hold breakfast

The Potomac Valley Fire Co. in Dargan, seven miles south of Sharpsburg on Harpers Ferry Road, will hold an all-you-can-eat breakfast Saturday from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the fire hall in Dargan.

Tickets cost $6. Those ages 5 and younger eat for free. 

The breakfast includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, sausage gravy, coffee and juice.

Benevola Church to hold oyster dinner Saturday

Benevola United Methodist Church on Benevola Church Road, just off Alternate U.S. 40 between Funkstown and Boonsboro, will hold an oyster, turkey, and ham dinner Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. at the Spiritual Life Center.

Tickets cost $15 for adults and $7 for those younger than 10.

Lions to sell ham sandwiches

The Sharpsburg Lions Club will sell country ham sandwiches for $2 each Thursday, March 7. Orders must be called in to 240-469-4674 by Sunday evening.

The sandwiches will be delivered Friday, March 8.

Church to sell chocolate eggs

Christ Reformed United Church of Christ in Sharpsburg is selling homemade chocolate peanut butter and coconut Easter eggs for 50 cents each.

Bilton to speak at library

Kathy Bilton, from the Potomac Valley Audubon Society, will speak at Sharpsburg Library Wednesday, March 6, at 7 p.m.

Bilton will discuss local spring native and exotic wildflowers and their medicinal uses. For more information, call 301-432-8825.

Bands to hold spaghetti dinner

The Boonsboro Middle and High School Band Boosters will hold a spaghetti dinner/band performance Friday, March 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Boonsboro High School. The menu includes spaghetti served with salad, bread and a beverage. Baked goods will be available for purchase.

The Boonsboro Middle and High School bands will perform.

Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and those 8 and younger. Children younger than 3 eat free. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Lutheran Church forms sewing group

Mount Zion Lutheran Church, at 20214 N. Locust Grove Road, invites  the community to join a sewing group that meets one day and one evening a month.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, March 19, from 9 a.m. to noon and 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. No sewing skills are necessary. Plenty of jobs are available for everyone. Volunteers are needed to cut material, pin pieces together and tie quilts together. Anyone interested in meeting new people, helping to make useful items for others and learning new skills, come and bring a friend.

Center offers activities for seniors

Martha Drennen, senior site manager, will present a class titled “Make Half of Your Grains Whole” Monday at the Southeastern senior site in Keedysville.

Sandy Ferris will conduct exercise classes Wednesdays and Marcia Davies will lead exercise classes Fridays. The center is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Preschool plans open house

Christ Lutheran Church, at 216 N. Cleveland Ave., Hagerstown, will hold a preschool open house Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Spread Your Wings Learning Center.
