Boys Basketball: Brunswick ousts Clear Spring

BRUNSWICK, Md. — Ryan Grabill had a plan. But after 51 seconds, he was going to Plan B.

And the Clear Spring boys basketball team was never able to fully recover, dropping a 59-43 decision to Brunswick in the Maryland Class 1A West Region East Section semifinal Thursday.

Clear Spring opened with a box-and-one defense in an effort to shut down the Railroaders’ leading scorer, Zach Hossler. But instead Collin Nusbaum torched the Blazers with a pair of 3-pointers in the first 51 seconds, forcing Grabill to call a timeout and go with a straight man-to-man defense.

Dallas Darling added a short jumper and another trey to spark a 17-5 run for Brunswick (14-9), which will host Smithsburg in the section final Tuesday.

“(Clear Spring) came out in a box-and-one, and we were able to hit a couple early treys,” said Railroaders coach Dan McLane. “When we get multiple people involved, we’re a pretty dangerous team.”

Michael Riley and Collin Schultz combined for nine points in the second quarter to keep the Blazers (8-14) within striking distance. They trailed 36-22 at halftime.

Playing on the road made any comeback effort more difficult for Clear Spring.

“That’s why we need to take care of business early in the season,” said Grabill. “That’s why every game matters.”

The Blazers managed to trim the margin to 44-31 entering the final eight minutes; and a 10-footer from Riley, a Brandon Quilici pull-up jumper, and Jaren Brandt’s 3-pointer closed the gap to 49-40 with 3:14 remaining.

But Brunswick hit all six of its free throws down the stretch to ensure the Blazers would get no closer.
