HAGERSTOWN — South Hagerstown’s boys basketball team stayed alive in the Maryland Class 3A West playoffs with a 71-58 quarterfinal victory over Northwood on Thursday night.

Neither the Rebels (16-8) nor the Gladiators (7-17) were able to create much separation in the first half, playing to a 17-17 tie with two minutes left in the second quarter. But then South found its groove.

The Rebels went on a 14-point streak to close out the first half, highlighted by six points from Devon King and 3-pointers by Che Swayne and Michael Hill. The Rebels went 12-for-29 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the line in the first half en route to the 31-17 lead.

“We needed those points,” said South coach Kevin Naylor. “We needed to get a cushion because we don’t protect leads well and we’re scared to find out what will happen if its close.”

Naylor’s words rang true in the third quarter. After shooting a measly 7-for-27 in the first half, Northwood came out firing, outscoring South 21-15 in the frame to cut the deficit to eight points, 44-38. Juvi Leveille, who went 1-for-10 in the first half, led the Gladiators with 10 points in the quarter and 19 points for the game.

“We didn’t know anything about this team coming in. We just winged it in the first half,” said Naylor. “They rebounded well and got hot in the second half. But Devon played well and the rest of the guys stepped up when they had to.”

King led South with 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Rebels outscored the Gladiators 25-20 to close out the game. King had a game-high 29 points and 12 rebounds.

Hill added eight points in the final frame, totaling 15 for the game. Hill went 2-for-6 from beyond the arc.

South will play at Tuscarora on Tuesday in the region semifinals.
