Hagerstown officials warn residents about man posing as city utility worker

February 28, 2013

Hagerstown city officials are warning residents about an individual who is presenting himself as a city utility worker.

The imposter is offering to reconnect customers’ electric service and is apparently offering to do the work while a customer is moving into a new residence, said City of Hagerstown spokeswoman Erin Wolfe.

Wolfe said all city employees carry a photo ID badge and customers may request to see the identification.

City utility workers who reconnect, disconnect and maintain the city’s electric system do not accept cash, Wolfe said.

Cash payments are only handled at the city’s customer service office, Wolfe said.

The Hagerstown Police Department is investigating the incidents involving the imposter and any information about the incidents can be reported to police at 301-790-3700.
