James Vincent "Vince" Hellane, 84, of Hagerstown, Md., died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at his home following a long battle with cancer. Vince will always be remembered for his unique sense of humor and his fondness for making others laugh.

Born June 9, 1928, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Joseph G. "Jack" Hellane and Ruth Maugans Hellane.

Vince graduated from St. Mary's High School and Columbia Business College.

He was a Korean War veteran, serving with the 11th Airborne Division.

Vince retired from the Western Maryland Railway (Chessie-CSX) after 37 years. Vince owned and operated his own piano business for 50 years. He was a skilled piano tuner and technician in the four state area. He also collected and restored antique clocks and watches. As a teenager, he was a lifeguard at the Municipal Swimming Pool in Hagerstown.

Vince was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hagerstown. 

He was an active member of Brotherhood Railway Airline Clerks for many years, holding various offices. He was also a lifetime member of the Funkstown American Legion, Dixon-Troxell Post 211, the Loyal Order of Moose Post 91, and a longtime member of the Western Enterprise Fire Company. 

Vince is survived by his loving and devoted family, his wife of almost 60 years, Nancy Larimore Hellane; daughter, Julia Hellane; son, Timothy Hellane, daughter-in-law, Pat Hellane; sister, Julia Garrott; and grandchildren, Darren "DJ" Reeder, Greg Pheabus, Andrew Pheabus and Laurel Hellane. His faithful dog, Max, misses him.

He was preceded in death by his son, Vince Hellane Jr., two brothers, Joseph G. "Jack" Hellane Jr., and John T. Hellane.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Christopher Moore will officiate, assisted by Pastor Randy Mosher and Rey Rodriquez. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Military honors will be conducted by Washington County Amvets Post 10 and Marine Corp. League of Hagerstown, 770 Frederick St.

Family will receive friends one hour before the service.
