Charles “Charley” Martin McCoy, 77, of 18732 Mesa Terrace, Hagerstown, Md., passed into eternal peace on Feb. 23, 2013.

Born and raised in Funkstown, Md., he was the son of the late Mabel Alice Hoffman-McCoy and Raymond Lewis McCoy.

Charley is survived by his two daughters and three sons and their spouses, Zandra Helfrick of Mercersburg, Pa., Lisa and Stephen Brezler of Salisbury, Md., Tim McCoy of Hagerstown, Rodney and Rita McCoy of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Greg and Gloria McCoy of Hagerstown; three brothers, Raymond McCoy of Hagerstown, Robert McCoy and William McCoy; sister, Mary Fogle of Funkstown; 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Stockslager of Funkstown; and daughter-in-law, Mary-Jo McCoy.

Charley was employed by the City of Hagerstown Fire Department and assigned to the Pioneer Hook and Ladder Fire Co., as driver, apparatus operator and firefighter of Truck 1 and Truck 11, and retired as a highly decorated firefighter after serving 34 years. He was a charter member of Hagerstown Professional Fire Fighters Union Local 1605. In addition to his employment with the fire department, he was also employed by Hagerstown Paint and Glass, as a highly skilled glazer and glass installer for 39 years.

Charley was known for his strength, bravery, hard work and determination.

Charley was a Christian and a member of the Virginia Avenue Church of God. He volunteered with Mount Hope Prison Ministry, visiting and ministering with inmates within the local detention center and state prisons.

Charley enjoyed dancing, and maintaining his meticulous yard and flower gardens.
He was always anxious and willing to help others.

A memorial service will be held at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, at noon Saturday, March 2, with the Rev. Shawn Bushman officiating.

The family welcomes friends and relatives prior to the service, between 10 a.m. and noon.
