A task force established to find a location for a dog park in Hagerstown has selected Fairgrounds Park as the site it will recommend to Hagerstown’s mayor and city council.

Maria Mestre, chairperson of a task force made up of Hagerstown residents, said the group is responsible for making recommendations and presenting a proposal to the mayor and Hagerstown City Council.

“This park was our top choice as it fulfilled all the criteria we were looking for such as location to residents, walking and driving distance to the park and sufficient parking,” Mestre said.

Earlier this year, the task force looked at 12 locations. After presenting a report to the council and mayor the task force narrowed the search to the three top sites for the park.

In addition to Fairgrounds Park, those sites included Hager Park and City Park.

“The task force also considered with existing pathways in place it could potentially be less costly to redevelop into a dog park by using some of the existing pathways already in existence. Although cost was not really part of the criteria we really wanted what was best for the dogs, local residents and visitors to the area,” Mestre said.

The recommendation will be presented to the city council in April.

“If mayor and council agree to the new recommendation then hopefully we will see some movement on the park by the end of the summer. We will be making recommendations that a community-based committee be set up to oversee the day to day running of the dog park,” Mestre said.
