A popular restaurant in downtown Hagerstown has closed its doors.

The Brickyard Grill at 15 W. Washington St. was closed as of Monday, according to an email that owner Chris Grossnickle sent to his customers Monday morning.

“Brickyard Grill is closed and will not be re-opening,” the email said. “I appreciate your support for the past two and a half years.”

On Monday, the restaurant’s lights were out and a sign that said, “Closed,” was hanging in the front window.

Grossnickle declined to comment for this story.

The Brickyard Grill opened on Nov. 1, 2010, in the building that formerly housed Bentley’s Bagels and the Courtyard Cafe.

The restaurant featured a variety of soups and sandwiches.

Grossnickle said at the time he opened that he had 14 years of experience in the restaurant business and wanted to use that knowledge to help revitalize downtown Hagerstown.

“I wanted to provide the (downtown) businesses and their employees with a place to enjoy great food that accommodates their busy schedules,” he said in a 2010 interview with The Herald-Mail.

The Brickyard Grill is one of several downtown businesses that closed or announced they were closing in the last several months.

Spin, a restaurant and nightclub at 43 S. Potomac St., closed in December after being in business for less than a year.

Earlier this month, Bill Clowser and Barbara Tritle, co-owners of Bikle’s Ski Shop at 7 N. Potomac St., announced they were going to retire at the end of the ski season after being in business for nearly 50 years.
