Cycle United event raises $26,000 for United Way

February 24, 2013

More than $26,000 was raised at the third annual Cycle United, a fundraising event for United Way of Washington County.

The event, which was founded by Dave Ruff of Ruff Fitness Training Center, was held Feb. 9 at Robinwood Professional Center in Hagerstown.

The event was attended by more than 350 participants who rode spin cycles from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event promotes fitness and raises funds for United Way’s Community Impact Fund.

The fund is used to support local health and human-service organizations that are working together with community leaders, faith-based organizations, and businesses to create long-lasting solutions to issues in the areas of education, income and health. The program is a way for the community to work together to find solutions to critical issues and make a positive impact on the county.

“This event is well-received by the active cyclist, as well as those who are interested in learning a new sport,” said Melissa Reabold, United Way’s executive director.

Cycle United is based on teams of eight riders with each rider cycling for one hour under the instruction of local fitness instructors. Riders join or form teams and ask for sponsors to support their efforts.

United Way is a volunteer-led organization and this event was no exception. Volunteers from local health and human- service organizations, South Hagerstown High School and Hagerstown Community College, as well as local businesses provided help to make the event successful.

“The event is our main fundraising event and to do it well, it takes time and manpower to coordinate,” Reabold said. “We are privileged to have a great group of volunteers who make the event fun for all involved.”

The event included a family fun and fitness fair hosted by Meritus Medical Center, which was also the main sponsor of Cycle United. The fair included cooking demonstrations, informational and educational sessions for teens, and a Zumbathon.
