Theodore Richard Byrd, 88, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, in Cary, N.C. He moved to North Carolina from Shepherdstown, W.Va., in 2003.

He was born April 16, 1924, in Porterstown, Md., the son of the late Clarence and Annie Drenner Byrd.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Virginia E. Byrd; and four brothers and four sisters.

He is survived by his daughter, Judy Vinitsky of Cary; his son, Richard T. Byrd of Shepherdstown; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, achieving the rank of 1st sergeant.

He retired from CSX Railroad in 1985 after 35 years of service. He was a member of Burnside First Church of God, and worked tirelessly after his retirement on the construction of this church.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, MD 21795, with the Rev. Ernest E. Witmer officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Sharpsburg, Md.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. The funeral home will open Sunday at 1 p.m.
