Williamsport schools put on lock down

It was a precautionary measure while federal agents served a warrant nearby

February 21, 2013

All three schools on the Williamsport campus were placed on modified lock down Wednesday afternoon while federal agents served a warrant nearby, officials said.

Will Kauffman, a school system spokesman, said in an email that school officials were contacted by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at 1:10 p.m. because officers “were handling a situation in the community.”

“The schools were advised to implement a modified lockdown,” Kauffman wrote. “The schools were contacted approximately 30 minutes later that the situation was resolved and the modified lockdown could be lifted.”

The outside doors of a school are locked, and students are kept inside when a modified lockdown is put into effect.

Kauffman said it was his understanding that there was never a threat to the students.

Deputy 1st Class Carly Hose, sheriff’s office spokeswoman, said she believed the federal agency that served the warrant was the U.S. Marshals Service.

The U.S. Marshals Service did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.

The schools that were involved during the modified lockdown were Springfield Middle School, Williamsport Elementary School and Williamsport High School.
