HAGERSTOWN — The Hagerstown Community College women’s basketball team closed out the regular season on a high note Wednesday, crushing Central Penn 86-46 at the HCC athletic complex.

“It was a good win, because we had two sophomores, Katie Sprecher and Ashley Smothers, playing their last home game,” HCC coach Vicky Bullett said. “They are two good role players that contributed to the sport. They are also good role models and displayed what student athletes should be.”

Sprecher came through with a double-double in her final game in the HCC gym, collecting 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with three assists.

“We just wanted to go out and have some fun,” Sprecher said. “We wanted to make our last home game a good one, come out and get the big lead, work the ball around and make the extra pass.”

Smothers is essentially done for the season with a torn ACL in her right knee. But Bullett put Smothers into the game midway through the second half and she scored a basket in her final home game.

Miesha Adams finished with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists for HCC (14-13). Tierra Taylor scored 14 points and Tiffany Wallace had 12 points and Katie Connolly contributed 10 points and four assists. Deidra Burch dished off six assists, while Sasha Orr added five assists, three steals and two blocked shots for the Hawks.

“We had the opportunity to use this game to prepare for the Region XX Tournament,” Bullett said. “We moved the ball a lot. Defensively, we were OK. We still have to work on boxing out better.”

Sprecher scored seven of her points in the first 10 minutes of the game to help the Hawks race out to a 31-14 lead.

By halftime, HCC had increased its advantage to 50-26.

HCC will play Chesapeake on March 2 in the Region XX Tournament semifinals at Frederick Community College.

“We’re playing well as a team right now,” Sprecher said. “We just need to carry it over next week into the tournament.”

We are going to work hard next week in practice and bring all that we have got into the tournament.”

Desiree Lawrence led Central Penn (6-14) with 17 points and nine rebounds. Jasmine Robinson added 14 points and Joy Graves had 13 points for the Knights.
