SMITHSBURG — As the old saying goes, better late than never.

Samiyah Williams’ only field goal of Tuesday’s game was a huge one, as she beat the final buzzer to lift North Hagerstown to a 41-39 MVAL Antietam victory over Smithsburg.

“This is a great win,” said North coach Cyndi Miller. “We normally play Smithsburg pretty close. Our players did exactly what we coached them to do in the fourth quarter, and fortunately it came out in our favor.”

North Hagerstown’s second lead of the game came with 6:59 left in the fourth quarter, as a LaFazia Harris layup put the Hubs (8-12, 8-6) ahead 30-28.

From there, neither team could secure a lead of more than two points.

Kinsey Shifflett tied the game for Smithsburg at 37 on a jumper with 1:08 left, but Kayla Peterson scored 12 seconds later for North. After a timeout, Elyse Koterwas tied the game again for the Leopards at 39 with 10.7 seconds left on the clock.

One timeout later, Crystal McLeod found Williams cutting toward the basket for the game-winning layup.

“It was definitely a close game. Not a pretty game, but coming out with a win going into the playoffs is always nice,” said Miller.

Smithsburg (6-13, 4-9) started the game on a 12-4 run, though North eventually clawed to within three points by halftime, trailing 20-17. The Hubs went 6-for-25 from the field in the first half, compared to 9-for-31 by the Leopards. McLeod scored six points and had four rebounds in the first half, Shelly Trumpower scored four points and Kayla Peterson added six rebounds.

The tempo slowed to start the second half, as neither team found many good looks in the third quarter. The Hubs outscored the Leopards 8-6 in the period, though North only shot 3-for-13, including two field goals from Peterson. Smithsburg shot 2-for-6.

McLeod heated up in the fourth quarter, scoring eight of her team-leading 16 points in the final period. She also contributed seven rebounds. Peterson finished with seven points and seven rebounds and Trumpower added eight points for North.

“Rebounding has been an emphasis for us this week, we’ve really been going after the ball,” said Miller. “Kayla’s our leader, averaging a double-double and leading the county in rebounding, but Crystal really came on tonight. Crystal’s a competitor. She grew as a player this evening.”

Bev Kum led Smithsburg with 17 points and 21 rebounds, both game highs. Shifflett had eight points and six rebounds and Koterwas had eight points for the Leopards.
