City council approves purchase of former Holiday Motel property

February 19, 2013

The Hagerstown City Council on Tuesday gave its unanimous approval to an ordinance authorizing the city to buy the former Holiday Motel property at the corner of West Washington and North Prospect streets.

The city plans to purchase the properties, located at 170 W. Washington St. and 12 N. Prospect St., for $27,500 from FCB Hagerstown LLC, according to the purchase agreement.

The ordinance, introduced Feb. 12 and set to go into effect March 22, cited four findings pursuant to city code that state that the buildings on the property were deteriorated to such an extent that they pose “a serious and growing menace” to public health and safety in the area, and are likely to continue contributing to the blighted condition of the area if left as is.

Funding for the purchase comes from the city’s Economic Redevelopment Fund.

City officials have said the decision to purchase the property was made after another investor expressed interest in obtaining the former motel and possibly reopening it.

Prior to the motel’s closure several years ago, the property drew police attention for reports of prostitution, drug use and vagrancy, according to city documents.
