Charles William “Coach” Osbourn Jr., 90, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., passed away on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at Canterbury Nursing Home in Shepherdstown.

Born March 10, 1922, in Shepherdstown, he was the son of the late Charles William Osbourn Sr. and Leoda McKee Osbourn.

He was a lifelong member of the New Street United Methodist Church.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

Charles began his 34-year teaching career at Hedgesville High School. He taught and coached for 28 years at Shepherdstown middle and high schools, where he influenced many young people. The football field at Shepherdstown Middle School was renamed in his honor to “Osbourn Field” in 1995. On Jan. 5, 2013, he received the Man of Distinction Award for outstanding dedication and extraordinary contributions to our community. He was a member of the Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the Shepherdstown Men’s Club. His family received the 4-H Family of the Year Award in 1986.

He is survived by one daughter, Nancy Sarra and husband, Terry, of Shepherdstown; one son, Mark Osbourn and wife, Sharon, of Shepherdstown; one brother, Robert Osbourn and wife, Marie, of Falling Waters; eight grandchildren, Scott Sarra and wife, Angie, Matthew Sarra and wife, Kathleen, Joy Lewis and husband, Eric, Jennifer Pownell and husband, Tim, Justin Osbourn, Ethan Osbourn and wife, Brooke, Seth Osbourn and wife, Janelle and Keira Osbourn. He also has five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Annabel Demory Osbourn in 2007; one son, Larry Osbourn; and two sisters, Mary Frances Smith and Betty Osbourn.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at New Street United Methodist Church, with Pastor Deanne Dixon-Gross and Bishop Charles Hunter officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Shepherdstown.

The family will receive friends at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Charles Town/Harpers Ferry, W.Va., on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
