YMCA gala set for Saturday

The Hagerstown YMCA’s gala fundraiser, “A Toast to the Twenties,” will be Saturday at Hager Hall Conference and Event Center on Dual Highway in Hagerstown.

The evening will begin with cocktails at 6:15 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:15 p.m.

Tickets cost $295 per couple and include cocktail hour, dinner for two, dancing and a chance at winning the grand prize, a 2013 Volkswagen Passat or $20,000 cash prize. 

Other prizes from local establishments will be given away throughout the evening.

This is the largest fundraiser the Hagerstown YMCA holds to help support its youth-sponsorship programs, as well as families unable to afford memberships.

Tickets can be purchased at the YMCA’s front desk or from any member of the YMCA’s board of directors.

Hot Wheels Day planned March 3

Shiloh United Methodist Church, 19731 Shiloh Church Road, Hagerstown, will hold its second annual Hot Wheels Day Sunday, March 3, from 2 to 5 p.m.

The event celebrates decades of model car fun. There will be several hundred Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars on display, and there will be multiple Hot Wheels tracks set up for racing.

Attendees are invited to bring their model cars for an afternoon of racing fun or bring their vintage cars for display. Admission is free. The event will feature door prizes, snacks and coupons for one month of free karate lessons at Shiloh Church.

Thrift shop to hold sale

Repeat Performance, sponsored by the Meritus Medical Center Auxiliary, will hold its annual winter clearance sale beginning Monday and running though Saturday, March 2, during regular business hours.

The shop will be open Monday, which is Presidents Day.

All winter and fall clothing, shoes and purses will be reduced to 50 percent off the original price. The only exception on sale items will be books, cards and stationery.

Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The store is at 18706 Crestwood Drive, behind Dunkin’ Donuts on Pennsylvania Avenue in Hagerstown.

Proceeds benefit patient health in the form of new medical equipment and services.

Losses for the week totaled 30 1/4 pounds for TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 0077. 

In the team challenges, team No. 1, the Topsy Girls, racked up losses of 11 1/4 pounds. The best TOPS losers were Louise Cline, Linda Lemen, Barb Trumpower and Joan Jones. Mildred Hluchy, Dorothy Smith and Dianne Keely led KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) in losses.

The no-no snack this week is ice cream.

The program was the monthly awards presentation followed by a play money auction.

In January, 64 members weighed in and 30 had perfect attendance. 

Sharron Twigg and Jones were voted shining stars. Honored KOPS were Joan Budny, Jean Betker and Louise Cline. Pat Hicks and Linda Siebert received honorable mentions. 

The best losers for the month were Emma Jean Robertson, Peggy Robinson, Susie Sword and Cline. Mildred and Joan won birthday charms and Dorothy won a vacation charm.

Millie Toms read a letter of gratitude from a group of soldiers in Afghanistan who received Christmas cards sent from the chapter.

The group meets Mondays at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave. in Hagerstown
