Prep basketball: Warriors girls control own tourney fate

The Maryland Public Schools Secondary Athletic Association conducted its draw on Sunday for the upcoming postseason basketball tournaments.

In the girls tournament, Boonsboro (14-8) surprisingly received the No. 1 overall seed and a first-round bye in the 1A West. The Warriors open play in the East Section quarterfinals on Feb. 25 against the winner of Clear Spring and Smithsburg, which will be played Friday.

In the West Section, No. 6-seed Hancock (15-7) will have a home game against No. 11-seed Fort Hill (13-5) on Friday.

In Class 3A, South Hagerstown (17-2) received a bye with the No. 2 seed. The Rebels will play at home Feb. 25 at 6:30 against the first-round winner between Northwood (1-19) and Einstein (1-20).

North Hagerstown (7-12), a 12th seed, will be on the road at fifth-seeded Seneca Valley (13-8) on Friday.
Williamsport (13-7) has a tough road with its No. 5 seed. The Wildcats have a first-round game at No. 4-seed Middletown (14-7) with the winner advancing to play No. 1-seed Walkersville (18-4).

The quarterfinals are scheduled for Feb. 25 with the region semifinals set for Feb. 27 and the region finals will be played March 1-2. The girls state meet is slated for March 7-9 at UMBC.

In the boys event, North Hagerstown received the highest seed of county teams.

The Hubs (16-5) have a No. 2 seed and first-round bye and will await the winner of Watkins Mill (13-9) and Einstein (9-12) in a 3A quarterfinal game on Feb. 28.

South Hagerstown (13-7) opens first-round play on Feb. 26 at 6:30 at home against Thomas Johnson (10-12). The Rebels are in the same bracket as No. 1 Tuscarora (19-3).

In 2A, Williamsport was seeded No. 4 and will host Liberty (11-10) on Feb. 26. That winner goes against No. 1-seed North Carroll (15-7) on Feb. 28.

In 1A, first-round games on Feb. 26 include No. 5-seed Boonsboro (8-14) hosting Manchester Valley (1-20) and No. 8-seed Clear Spring (7-12) hosting North Carroll (4-18) in the West Region East Section.

In the West Section, Hancock (7-11) travels to Fort Hill (10-10).

All first-round games for the boys are to be played Feb. 26. The quarterfinals are to take place on March 5 with region semifinals scheduled on March 7 for 1A and 2A and March 8 for 3A.

The state finals will be conducted March 14-16 at the University of Maryland.

Game times and any adjustments to playing dates as allowed the schools by the state, will be made the individual hosting school.
