Men's Basketball: HCC's Carter's shot beats buzzer, Harford

February 17, 2013

BEL AIR, Md. — Hagerstown Community College’s Jerel Carter hit one 3-pointer on Sunday.

And it came at the most opportune time.

Carter banked in a 35-foot jumpshot — two steps inside of the halfcourt line — at the buzzer to give Hawks their second consecutive Maryland JuCo Conference tournament title with a 79-76 victory over Harford Community College at Harford.

The Hawks (26-4) trailed by a point until Christian Leach hit his first of two foul shots to tie the score at 76-76 with nine seconds remaining. But he missed the second, which Harford’s Dimitrious Jelen-Joy rebounded.

The Dragons rushed down the floor for a final shot, but Jelen-Joy dribbled the ball off his foot and out of bounds.

After HCC called a timeout with 4.3 seconds remaining, Carter inbounded the ball to Donte Thomas, who passed it back. Carter took two dribbles and launched the game-winning shot.

HCC led by as many as nine points in the first half with a 31-21 lead after a Antonio Jenifer layup with 5:09 remaining before the break. Harford closed with a 10-4 run to end the half to trail by only 35-31 at the intermission.

The Dragons tied the game at 39-39 on a Carlos Brown layup with 17:17 remaining.

HCC led by as many as 14 points, holding a 64-50 lead after an Antwan Pittman 3 at the 9:34 mark before Harford began to make its final move.

HCC led 72-61 after Jenifer scored on a layup with 5:13 remaining. Harford battled back with a 15-4 run over the next 4:40 to take a 76-75 lead with :33 remaining as Jelen-Joy hit a pair of free throws, the final of the six foul shots he scored in the comeback.

Jenifer led HCC with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Christian Leach had 21, including four of HCC’s nine 3-pointers. Kervin Rameau added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Hawks.

Jelen-Joy led Harford with 27 points.

With the victory, the Hawks will probably be the top seed for the Region XX tournament, which will be played March 1-3 at the HCC athletic complex. Frederick, Harford, Baltimore and Allegany are projected to join HCC in the tournament field.
